Groupon deal took Matt and I to Dos Juan’s Puffy Tacos for dinner yesterday

I’ve been keeping my eye on Groupon and other similar websites for good deals, particularly on food and entertainment, in the DFW area.

I saw one for Dos Juan’s Puffy Tacos the other day and snatched it up after checking Yelp. The reviews weren’t terrible, and I figured we weren’t paying a lot if it turned out to be not so bueno —  I paid $7 on Groupon for a $15 voucher.

Plus, the name of the place made me giggle and lots of off-color humor ensued.

We arrived around 3 p.m. Matt had just woken up (since he’s doing a crazy part-time graveyard shift thing that messes up his normal schedule) and I had just arrived home from visiting my parents in San Saba, Texas. Both of us were famished.

The restaurant was empty except for us. So, service was fabulous. The guacamole wasn’t anything special, but it tasted delicious as our appetizer. Matt ordered a platter with a gordita, enchilada and taco or something like that. I ordered something comparable.

I think the best thing we ate was Matt’s enchilada, which had green sauce and white cheese. My plate was greasy all over from the cheese. I’m not sure it was good quality cheese since it leaked grease everywhere. Kinda gross.

The puffy taco shells were interesting, though. I’d never seen a puffy corn tortilla before, and it tasted pretty good.

Also, I think it’s worth noting that the ambiance was strange. It was Spanish bull-fighting art meets black and white artsy photos of cutlery meets mounted deer head. Basically, it was all over the place and you could tell it catered to the college kids.

Overall, I gave it a 3 out of 5 on Yelp. If anyone has suggestions for better places to get cheap but delicious Mexican food in Fort Worth, do share!
